WHY YIN YOGA?

I recommend yin yoga to every person who sees me for massage or healing therapies.

Why?

Most of us are tight, riddled with knots and kinks, and pain old feeling sore and achy in at least one area of the body.

When we are constantly go, go, go, even if you are conscious of working out and being active, most of us just do not stretch enough. This goes as well for people who have very sedentary working lives, and are in front of a computer screen. Our muscles have memory, and get used to being in a certain position, and need to be regularly released, not only though massage.

The most effective way I've found to eliminate pain, and old holding patterns within the muscles is through a yoga practice called yin. A yin yoga class is a restful, inactive, stretch based class where postures are held for at least 3 minutes, often more. This is very opposite to yang, a more brisk, active and fiery style, which most people are used to when they think of yoga.

It is very important that we release the fascia in order deeply release the muscle. Fascia is the fibrous, elastic tissue that connects and surrounds the muscles and organs of the body. In order to get deep enough and release the holding patterns of our musculature, we must hold a stretch for at least 3 to 5 minutes to achieve this.

Doing this on your own can prove quite challenging, so I always recommend attending a class or following along an online session. It is easy for the mind to wander and to want to switch positions before reaching the 3 minute mark. Don't let this discourage you! Although yin can test you both physically and mentally, it is one of the most rewarding practices for the benefits that you'll feel.

Expect to leave a yin class feeling taller and longer, clear headed and best of all, just like you've had a full body massage! Try for yourself, and tell me if you agree!
